Yesterday was one of those fairly ordinary days that ended up being really
good. First, my family decided to come to the beach with me (well Mrs
Gutted opted for going in a different car). Then it turned out to be super
sunny with hoards of people on the beach. There was a fishing competition
going on, so a lot of people had headed to Cooden for a less crowded
launch, but I was under orders to sail near a chip shop, so I braced myself
for some aggro, as usurf told me that a kite had snarled up one of the
fishermen earlier.
Jon was already there when I arrived, so he got to witness the full
hilarity of the green machine's first daylight outing (under my ownership).
He clearly knows a thing or two about cars, as he managed to see the beauty
under the beast. But enough talk of nice cars, we rigged a 6.5 each and
after a quick chat with the nearest fisherman to check surf/fish relations,
we headed out, I planed straight off the beach and had a good blast for a
while in winds that ranged from nicely powered to maxed out. I popped in to
check on the family and at the same time saw Mr. Golden Ticket, who's luck
continues. He ditched his rig last weekend when his uj broke and had
assumed it was lost, but it turned up unscathed somewhere in the bay and
was handed into the coastguard - spawny git.
The next bit of blasting was fun until the wind pretty much switched off.
Jon and I both got hauled downwind by the current as we headed out. He
tacked off and I held on about a minute longer and as I got settled on the
new tack, I saw that he had caught a gust all the way back to shore - lucky
sod. I was being taken off in an altogether less satisfying direction which
ended up beaching me about a mile downwind. I figured I'd bag the sail out
and hope to claw my way back. A combination of that and a boost in
windstrength and I was back in the land of the living in just a couple of
tacks, although it was fascinating seeing how strong the tide was buy
marking my tracks against the yellow boueys. The next half hour was
cracking, full power (would have been fine on my 5.7 usurf!) and flying.
Jon appeared with a camera, so my head became fuddled with visions of
Gutted cover shots, so momentarily forgot how fast you reach the shoreline
if you head towards the cameraman at full pelt on a broad reach - result is
an embarrassing photo posted on the forum. Thanks Jon!
